Let’s Bring Neighbors together,
New Haven

Our mission is to build block-by-block civic infrastructure in New Haven through community-building, neighborhood projects, and civic participation — with the vision of making this century the Civic Century: A renewal of civic life, service, and democracy.

“What motivated us to do this work is that we saw that there was such a need for food in the community and we wanted to make sure that community members are receiving fresh fruits and veggies, and that everyone in the community, no matter if you live in the neighborhood or not, has access to food for themselves and their families.”

Make It

OUR ProjectS.

  • One of the most important investments we can make is in opportunities to get to know our neighbors. In a time of increased loneliness and polarization, it is critical to have a renewed surge in community: relationships, trust, and shared purpose with individuals right next door.

That’s why we launched the Know Your Neighbors Fund: It is a small fund to provide micro-grants of $100 to $200 to New Haven residents to get new projects off the ground that bring neighbors together: small morning chess clubs, outdoor music nights, a Sunday basketball league, regular block parties, street clean up crews. We believe that — in aggregate, over time — these kinds of community activities led by residents make a difference to build a healthier, more resilient, more connected city we love.

  • We host our own events and help others do the same!

  • Start in New Haven is a community pitch night where individuals can pitch ideas for new events, civic improvements, startups, and other projects to a community audience — with the goal of providing energy, support, and resources to turn the ideas into a reality.

Through Start in New Haven, we hope to encourage a spirit of yes — where, regardless of how early your idea is, New Haven community members are here to support you in your next steps.

Keep on the look-out for the next event happening soon!
